By leaving the army aside, Costa Rica has given priority to education as a development weapon. An example of this is that since more than 130 years ago, elementary and high school education is free and mandatory.
For this reason, the country assigns 6.5% of its gross internal product to education. With this measure literacy has been kept at a level that is above 95%.
English is a mandatory foreign language taught throughout the whole education process, be it elementary, high school or university. Emphasis has also been made in the development of computer knowledge. Most public and private schools have a well developed computer system.
Besides there is the option of technical professional education. This degree is given in the industrial, business, services and agricultural areas.
There are more than 40 private and 4 state universities, among which the Technological Institute of Costa Rica stands out. This institute prioritizes investigation, teaching and preparation in the technological area.
